The Incident: When Storm Damage Threatens Your Home

In Fall River, we see our fair share of high winds, heavy rain, and strong coastal storms. What looks like a few missing shingles from the ground is often a flashing or underlayment failure waiting to happen. For this project, a local homeowner contacted us after an insurance adjuster approved a "patch repair" following a recent storm.

Our goal wasn't just to cover the wood; it was to ensure this roof remains watertight for the next decade.

The "Before": More Than Just Missing Shingles

The Technical Assessment:

As a Master Contractor, I don’t just look at the shingles. We inspected for:

  1. Wind-Lift: We checked the surrounding "undamaged" shingles to see if the seals had been broken. Once the factory seal is broken by high winds, the shingle will never re-adhere properly.

  2. Underlayment Integrity: The felt was exposed. If water sits on exposed felt for more than 48 hours, it begins to degrade the roof decking (OSB or plywood) underneath.

  3. Granule Loss: We assessed the surrounding area to ensure the remaining roof still had enough "life" to bond with the new materials.

The Process: Negotiating for the Right Materials

Insurance companies love to write estimates for "standard" shingles. On this job, we focused on Shingle Matching. One of the biggest challenges in roofing is that shingles fade over time due to UV exposure. If you just slap "New Black" next to "10-Year-Old Black," it looks like a checkerboard. We worked to source a product that matched the profile and weathered tone of the existing roof, ensuring the repair didn't kill the home’s curb appeal.

The "After": Seamless Integration & Weather-Tight Seal

What you’re seeing here:

  • Proper Lapping: We integrated the new shingles into the existing courses, ensuring the "step" pattern was maintained to shed water correctly.

  • New Ice & Water Shield: We didn't just put paper down; we used a high-temp membrane in the critical zones to prevent future leaks.

  • Thermal Bonding: We ensured the repair was done during a temperature window that allowed the new shingles to heat-seal, creating a monolithic barrier against the next storm.

Why You Can’t Risk a "Quick Fix" on Your Roof

A roof is a system, not a collection of parts. When you’re dealing with an insurance claim, the "patch" needs to be as strong as the original install. At Vieira & Sons, we prioritize the Golden Triangle: we stay within the insurance-approved budget, work on a tight timeline to prevent further damage, and never compromise on the quality of the seal.
